Equipment in the Lab
03.11.09: Another upgrade: 2 HP DL360’s @ 2.8ghz ea w/ 4gb RAM. Soon to be modded to a SATA RAID system, rather than the stock UW320 HotSwap SCSI config that’s in there now.
10.28.08: A short while ago, I acquired a major update to my lab. I have now got two core routers (a beast of a 7507, a slightly smaller 7010) and a core switch (a Catalyst 5000). They’re populated with FDI, ATM, high speed serial, routing and switching modules, and just about anything else I could need for a setup such as this.
In addition to that, I acquired several additional 2500s, and an associate has decided to integrate his 2500s and a 2511 access server into my lab. We also have a Xyplex terminal server, but cannot find the proper wiring combination for either terminal-console or router-console access.
As I have time, I’ll complete an inventory of the modules and IOS revisions on the lab. And at some point I’ll put up a photo of the blinky lights in the dark, as that is definitely the main goal of the lab…
I’m running:
- (1) Cisco 2610 w/ 64mb DRAM, 16mb Flash
IOS version Somethin or other
NM4 A/S 4 pt Serial module, Ethernet, WIC-T1, 2nd WIC-T1,
Console & Aux
- (3x) 2503 w/ 4 to 8mb RAM, and 2 to 4mb Flash each (varied)
IOS version Somethin or other
2 DB60 Serial pt, 1 AUI Ethernet pt (w/ Transceivers), 1 BRI ISDN port,
Console & Aux
- (1) 2501 w/ 4mb RAM, 4mb Flash
IOS version something or other
2 DB60 Serial pt, 1 AUI Ethernet pt (w/ Transceivers)
Console & Aux
- (1) Catalyst 2900XL
24 port 10/100 switch
IOS 12.0, 32mb RAM, and the WS-X2922-XL-V 100mbit fibre module.
- (1) Catalyst 1900
24 port 10mbit switch
I also use the Boson NetSim software, which is good, but not that great. It’s good practice, but the cause-and-effect learning of connecting the cables isn’t something you can simulate.
My servers:
- Stargate
SBS2003, 2x P3 866mhz, 1.5gb PC133 ECC RAM,
1 (broken) mirrored 18gb SCSI array (system partition), [fixed the broken RAID by popping in an IDE drive and using software RAID thru Win2k3. Ugly, but works.]
1 mirrored 50gb SCSI array (data),
Adaptec 2100 SCSI RAID controller
- Centaurus
A VirtualPC instance running CentOS 4.5
- Dives
IBM T30, WinXP, P4 2ghz, 2gb RAM, 40gb drive, WiFi
Ignignokt: No one can defeat the Quad Laser.
Err: Jumping is useless.

When I was in school, graduated in 1976, if you were caught using a calculator you got a detention. Now, If you dont have one, you get a detention. Its not hard to see why these kids running cash registers cant count change, they have to read the print out, and if that isnt working, they are just lost. Kind of sad that we are letting computers and electronics replace using our brains for so many things. They are a heck of an advantage on a lot of things, but they are totally destroying our kids ability to connect personally with one another, and basically dumbing down their brains. I see it all the time.
